These delicious carrots have a smooth skin with orange-red roots and pointed tips. This variety differs from both the Chantenay and Nantes type carrots in several ways. While the Nantes is almost coreless, the Danvers has a strong rigid core making it higher in fiber. This quality makes it wonderful for cooking. Whether you saute or steam these carrots, they do not get mushy like other  carrots. It does grow well in poor soil and shallow gardens where caliche (cement-like subsoil) is a problem. These carrots are about 6 inches long and 2 inches thick at the shoulder.  A hardy variety, these carrots are not prone to splitting or cracking. This heirloom variety originated in 1871. 75 days.

RAISED BED PLANTING GUIDE: After thinning, plants should be 2-3"apart throughout bed.

SOIL TYPE RECOMMENDED: light, deeply tilled soil.

TUCSON PLANTING INFORMATION: If caliche (hard rock like formation) is a problem, grow half-long varieties in raised beds. Rocky soil produces gnarled carrots. Plant August 15 to March 15.
