BROCCOLI
WHEN TO PLANT: sow seed 4-6 weeks before
frost-free date. Best growth when temperature averages 55°
DEPTH OF PLANTING: cover seed with 1/2"
of fine soil
PLANTS APART IN ROWS (AFTER THINNING):
12-16" apart
DISTANCE BETWEEN ROWS: 2-3 feet apart
RAISED BED PLANTING GUIDE: After thinning,
plants should be 12" apart throughout bed.
SOIL TYPE RECOMMENDED: soil should be rich
in nitrogen.
NOTE: Harvest large center cluster when buds
are still tightly shut, before the yellow flower appears. Side clusters will
then form. Harvest the smaller shoots with 1-2" of stem to
encourage further clusters.
TUCSON PLANTING INFORMATION: Fall planting
can be done between July 25 and October 15. A winter
planting January 1 to February 15 is also possible.
Broccoli is an excellent fall crop that continues to produce
through Tucson's mild winters.
