Radicchio is a member of the chicory family but this variety is grown for its leaves, not its roots. This beautiful plant produces compact red tinged heads. There is a definite bitterness but in salads it accents the mild flavor of lettuce very well. The leaves can be steamed to reduce the bitter flavor and it can be served as a cooked vegetable. This hardy vegetable is worthy of a place in your garden.
